B is for Basketball

So it's March Madness...or whatever and I'm trying to care. I really am! I filled out a bracket for the tournament and everything. But my heart just isn't in it! I have learned to love college football but I can't get into the basketball. Sorry!!

However, I have decided I am going to turn my focus to the pro world. After watching a 60 minutes interview with Lebron James, Brett and I have both decided we are BIG fans. He is really a great guy. And he's only 25!!! Already he is an inspiration to his team and all other athletes. He not only leads on the field (just kidding, I know it's a court) but also in the real world. He is building a successful empire worth millions and he's not stopping there. His goal is to be the first billionaire athlete! WOW!

Brett has always talked about how much he respects Lebron for handling the fame he's earned so well. Despite the temptations he grew up with in Akron as well as the temptation that came when his first paycheck hit his bank account, he has stayed on the straight and narrow. He is a respectable guy! I wish all athletes would model themselves after him.

In his 60 minutes interview he said something that we thought was profound: "You can't be afraid to fail, It's the only way you succeed -- you're not going to succeed all the time, and I know that. You have to be able to accept failure to get better. You can't be afraid to fail."

I think most successful people would agree with this statement. In life, we can't let fear keep us from taking risks. Afterall, most fear comes from Satan anyway because he doesn't want us to succeed. He doesn't even want us to try!

For Brett & I, our most recent fear has been to buy or not buy a house and all the variables that go along with that. We want a home of our own but it is a HUGE decision that we don't want to take lightly! What if we buy the wrong house? What if we lose our jobs? What if, what if, what if!?! It gets a little stressful. However, the bottom line is that we can sit back, and be too fearful to take the risk of buying a home or we can go for it and see what happens! Either way, we're in it together and will figure it out as we go.

In basketball terms that means we can either sit it out (life) on the bench or we can get out there and play ball! Thanks Lebron for the inspiration! You've turned me into a Cavaliers fan. And I'll be rooting for your team to win the championship this year! I still know very little about the team or any of the other players, so bear with me as I research further. I'm going to figure out exactly what it means to be a Cavalier fan. Until then, Go Cavs!!

A is for Aardvark

Friday evening we got our fill of some great local musical talent. First we went to the Art Gallery Cafe to watch Brett's boss's band - The Usual Suspects. They are a cover band and they play a variety of hits, old and new. They sure know how to jam! While there, Brett and I had some coffee and enjoyed the show. Had our evening ended there, we would have been content.

But wait, there's more! After one final song....(GLORIA! G-L-O-R-I-A!) including full audience participation and even a little cowbell, we headed over to the Aardvark to enjoy a few more concert performances.

Brett introduced me to Green River Ordinance (you should check them out! http://www.greenriverordinance.com/ ) a few years ago and we have been fans ever since. We first saw them in Lubbock and then last year they played at Central Market and we were hooked again. They just got signed to Virgin Records and Friday night was their CD release party at a little place called the Aardvark. We thought it would be fun to go and support them. They did not disappoint. It was a great concert. They played a few of their older, more familiar songs and then they introduced us to some new ones. I can't wait to get my hands on their new CD. I really like it! I expect them to do really well in the future. That's why I'm saving our ticket stubs. Then I can prove that I was a fan before it was really cool to be a fan. Hurry and you can too!

The opening band for GRO (that's what the cool kids call them because who has time to say Green River Ordinance??) was also really good and I think they will also be big stars some day! Their band, The Campaign, is similar to GRO. They have some really good songs - you should also check them out! ( http://www.myspace.com/thecampaignmusic ) You can buy their EP album on Itunes, which is pretty cool!

All in all, Friday was a great start to the weekend! We had a great time!
